Tigerfishing in Tanzania
Tanzania River Monsters!
Targeted Sport Fish Species
Tanzania offers several incredible angling opportunities, including the legendary Tigerfish.
Tigerfishing in the Kilombero Valley
The mighty Tigerfish is a bucket list item for many anglers. These toothy beasts are famous for putting up a tough and acrobatic fight that rivals much larger fish species. Although, I have visited Africa many times, I had never caught this freshwater version of "Jaws"! Most rivers in Africa have been overfished and catching a trophy sized Tigerfish over ten pounds has become increasingly difficult.
Tanzania is located in East Africa near Kenya. The country is renowned for exceptional safari opportunities, featuring famous attractions such as, Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater and other famous National Parks plus Africa's highest peak Mt. Kilimanjaro. In September 2025, I journeyed to the Kilombero Valley of Tanzania, a remote 7,000 square mile wilderness area, which has no human inhabitation and receives very little fishing pressure. The area is reached by charter flight from the city of Dar es Salaam. The two rivers I fished were awesome, holding great numbers of trophy fish. The camp record Tigerfish weighed an amazing 28 lbs! I didn’t catch any fish quite that big but did land several over 10 lbs and lost several in the 15+ lb range. I stayed in a high-end tented camp on the river bank with ensuite bathroom, great food and Starlink WIFI. We saw lots of wildlife such as Hippopotamus, Crocodiles, Elephant, Waterbuck and Hartebeest.
As an added bonus, I fished half a day along the coast of Dar es Salaam and caught my first Giant Trevally.
This is not an inexpensive trip, but I rate it as one of the world’s best fishing adventures!
