Fishing in the Azores

Big-game fishing in the deep blue waters of this Atlantic island chain.

Blue Marlin Fishing in the Azores

I took my first group over to this incredibly scenic Island chain off the coast of Portugal in late September. The first day’s results were outstanding with ten Blue Marlin hooked and eight landed ranging in size from 250 to 650 LB. On the second day the seas turned rough but a 500 LB Marlin was landed. All fish were caught a mile or less from shore in the shadows of awesome Pico Volcano and were released to fight another day.

The Azores is one of the few places on earth that possesses all these features: short run times to fishing grounds, incredible scenery, nearly no boat traffic, high odds on catching a Blue Marlin over 500 LB and the possibility of hooking a rare Grander! I expect the popularity of the destination to explode in the near future so go soon!

My next Azores hosted trip is scheduled for September 2027 with arrival in Horta on September 5th, fishing full days on 6th, 7th, 8th. The trip includes four nights in a four star hotel at the marina with a buffet breakfast included and three full days fishing with lunch and drinks on boat. Price: $ each for four people on a 40 boat or $3200 each on a 36 foot boat

Azores sightseeing: Before the fishing portion of trip, I was joined on the largest Island, Sao Miguel by good friends, Chuck, Rob & Dick for a short tour. The capitol city of Ponta Delgada can be reached by a short 4 ½ direct flight from Boston. Despite rainy weather we enjoyed a guided tour of some of the island’s attractions. We found the local food and wine to be excellent and very reasonably priced. Then it was on to Horta on Fial Island where we met up with Brent, Rebecca, Steve & Veronica who arrived via Lisbon. A very nice hotel was our home for the fishing trip. I can arrange sightseeing for you on some of the nine Azores Islands.
